What documents are required for FRRO registration?
Every FRRO registration needs a recent passport-size photograph, your passport with the visa and Indian arrival stamp pages, and proof of your address in India. Then add documents for your visa type, such as the employment contract and the employer's request and undertaking letters for an employment visa, or a bonafide certificate for a student visa.
Documents every e-FRRO application needs
Whatever the service, the FRRO starts with the same core documents. Upload each one as a clear colour scan.
- Recent passport-size photograph on a white background. Our photo resizer saves it at the e-FRRO size.
- Passport scans: the bio page, the last page, your Indian visa and the Indian arrival stamp.
- Proof of address in India: a registered rent agreement, a utility bill with the owner's letter and ID, a hostel or hotel letter, or a copy of Form C.
- Residential Permit, if you've registered before, for extensions and exit permits.
- Request letter explaining the delay, if you're applying after your deadline.

Exit permit documents by situation
You need an exit permit only when something stops a normal departure. Every case needs your passport, a photo, proof of address and a request letter. Then add:
- Overstay or expired visa: justification letter explaining the overstay, undertaking from your Indian host or sponsor, and your visa's supporting documents. Keep a confirmed flight ticket and police verification report ready.
- Child born in India: child's passport, birth certificate, hospital discharge summary, parents' passports and visas or OCI cards, parents' marriage certificate, and a consent letter from both parents.
- Lost passport: new passport or Emergency Travel Document from your embassy, FIR or police loss report, and a justification letter.
- Former Indian citizen: foreign passport, citizenship certificate, cancelled Indian passport, surrender certificate, and cancellation of voter ID and ration card.
- Temporary landing permit: TLP copy, arrival stamp and a justification letter.

Request, undertaking and justification letters
Most FRRO files need at least one letter. Missing details in these letters are a common reason for an FRRO query.
Request letter
Asks the FRRO for the service you need. It gives your name, nationality, passport number, visa type and number, and address in India. Employees' request letters come from the employer on company letterhead.
Undertaking letter
A signed promise from your sponsor that you'll follow Indian law and your visa conditions. Company undertakings carry the signatory's name, designation, signature and company stamp. For an Entry (X) visa, your spouse signs it.
Justification letter
Explains why you're late, overstayed or need an exit permit, with dates and supporting proof such as a hospital letter. See our exit permit request letter sample.
How to avoid document rejections
- Scan in colour, flat and readable, with no cut-off edges.
- Keep every file within the size limit. Use our document resizer to compress PDFs for e-FRRO.
- Match the details. Your name, passport number and address must be the same on every document and letter.
- Apostille foreign certificates. Marriage and birth certificates issued abroad should be apostilled or attested by an Indian mission, with an English translation if needed.
- Sign, stamp and date every company letter, and keep the originals in case the FRRO asks to see them.

Company undertakings go on letterhead with the signatory's name, designation, signature and company stamp.
What is a request letter for the FRRO?
A request letter asks the FRRO for a specific service, such as registration, extension or an exit permit. It gives your name, passport number, visa details and the service you need. If you are applying late, it must also explain the reason for the delay.
What address proof does the FRRO accept?
The FRRO accepts a registered rent or lease agreement, a recent electricity or telephone bill with a letter and ID from the property owner, a letter from your hostel or hotel, or a copy of Form C filed by the place you are staying.
What documents do I need for an exit permit after overstaying?
You need your passport and visa, a photo, proof of address, a request letter, a justification letter explaining why you overstayed, and an undertaking from your Indian host or sponsor. Employees also need employer letters and tax documents, and students need Form S and a letter from their institution. The FRRO may also ask for a confirmed flight ticket and a police verification report.
Do foreign documents need an apostille for the FRRO?
Public documents issued outside India, such as marriage and birth certificates, should be apostilled or attested by an Indian mission. Documents in a language other than English should also have an English translation.
What is Form C?
Form C is the online report that hotels, guest houses, hostels and other places housing foreigners file with the Bureau of Immigration when a foreigner stays with them. A copy of Form C is accepted by the FRRO as proof of address.
