FRRO and FRO: what's the difference?

  • FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) is a regional office of the Bureau of Immigration covering one or more states.
  • FRO (Foreigners Registration Officer) is usually the Superintendent or Commissioner of Police of a district, who handles registration and visa services locally within the FRRO's region.
  • You don't choose the office yourself. e-FRRO sends your application to the right FRRO or FRO based on your address in India.

Do you need to visit the FRRO office?

Usually not. Registration, visa extensions, exit permits and most other services are filed online on the e-FRRO portal, and the office replies by email. If you're called in:

  • Take your original passport and the originals of every document you uploaded.
  • Carry a printout of your e-FRRO application and the FRRO's email.
  • Go on the date and time given. Office hours vary, and most FRROs are closed on weekends and public holidays.

Not sure which documents you need? Use our FRRO document checklist, and check your deadline with the FRRO registration checker.
