Late FRRO registration fines

Missing your FRRO registration deadline is treated the same way as an overstay, with the same penalty slabs. If your visa needs registration, check your exact deadline with our FRRO registration checker and register before it passes.

What happens if you overstay in India

  • You can't simply fly out. Once your visa expires, you need an exit permit from the FRRO before immigration lets you leave.
  • The fine is paid first. The FRRO collects the penalty before it issues the exit permit.
  • The FRRO asks why. Expect to give a justification letter, and in some cases a police verification report.
  • Serious cases go further. The Act allows up to three years in prison and a fine of up to ₹3 lakh, and long or repeated overstays can lead to deportation and a ban on re-entry.

How to pay the fine and leave India

  1. Apply for an exit permit on the e-FRRO portal from where you're staying in India.
  2. Upload your documents, including a request letter and a justification letter. Our document checklist lists everything for your visa.
  3. Pay the fine online when the FRRO reviews your case and opens payment.
  4. Download your exit permit and fly within its validity. Exit permits are usually valid for up to a month.

Old penalties before September 2025

Many websites still quote the old fines. Under a 2018 Ministry of Home Affairs circular, overstay penalties were charged in US dollars: USD 300 for up to 90 days, USD 400 for 91 days to two years and USD 500 for more than two years. These no longer apply. Since 1 September 2025, the rupee slabs above are the law.

How to avoid an overstay

  • Track your visa expiry date, not just your planned travel date.
  • Apply for an extension early on e-FRRO if you need to stay longer, before your visa expires.
  • In a medical emergency, apply for an extension before expiry with a letter from the hospital.
  • Register on time if your visa needs FRRO registration.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the overstay fine in India?

Under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, the fine is ₹10,000 for an overstay of up to 30 days, ₹20,000 for 31 to 90 days, ₹50,000 for 91 to 180 days and ₹1 lakh for 181 days to one year. Beyond one year it is ₹2 lakh plus ₹50,000 for each further year, up to a maximum of ₹3 lakh.

Is there a grace period for overstaying an Indian visa?

No. The official slabs start from the first day, so even a one-day overstay carries a ₹10,000 fine and needs an exit permit before you can leave India.

Can I pay the overstay fine at the airport?

No. You apply for an exit permit on the e-FRRO portal, pay the fine online when the FRRO opens payment, and leave with the approved permit. Immigration at the airport can stop a passenger whose visa has expired.

Is the fine the same for late FRRO registration?

Yes. Missing your FRRO registration deadline attracts the same penalty slabs as an overstay, starting at ₹10,000 for up to 30 days late.

Who pays reduced overstay fines?

Tibetans, Buddhist monks from Mongolia, and Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Afghan nationals eligible for a Long Term Visa pay between ₹50 and ₹550. Afghan nationals who are not eligible for a Long Term Visa pay a flat ₹1,000.

Can I be banned from India for overstaying?

Serious or repeated overstays can lead to prosecution, with up to three years in prison and a fine of up to ₹3 lakh under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, as well as deportation and a ban on re-entry. A short overstay that is reported and paid promptly is usually settled with the fine.

How long does an exit permit take after an overstay?

It depends on the FRRO and your case. Apply as soon as you know you've overstayed, and at least a week before you plan to fly, so there is time to answer any FRRO query.

What was the overstay fine before September 2025?

Under a 2018 Ministry of Home Affairs circular, overstay fines were set in US dollars: USD 300 for up to 90 days, USD 400 for 91 days to two years and USD 500 for more than two years. The rupee slabs replaced them when the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 took effect on 1 September 2025.
