Who Can Convert Their E-visa and Any Other Indian Visa to an X Visa
The Indian government offers an Entry visa (X) to foreigners who visit India for short term and long term. As per the law, the Indian Government provides an Entry Visa / X Visa / Dependent Visa / X-1 Visa to the following individuals.
- A person of Indian origin (foreign citizen, except a national of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Iran, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal) who has held an Indian passport in the past or whose parents/grandparents/great-grandparents were born in India and held an Indian passport.
- Foreign nationals married to an Indian Citizen and children of an Indian citizen/an OCI cardholder.
- Any dependents of foreigners who visit the country for business purposes, student research, medical, or employment.
- Anyone of Indian origin holding a Surrender certificate/Renunciation Certificate or a cancelled Indian Passport may also apply for an entry visa for themselves.
Eligibility to apply for Entry Visa / X Visa / Dependent Visa / X-1 Visa Conversion and Extension
A foreign national married to an Indian citizen who is travelling on any other visa is eligible to convert their existing visa into an Entry Visa / X Visa / Dependent Visa/ X-1 Visa through the e-FRRO Portal. It usually takes 3 to 5 weeks. On an Entry Visa India, the applicant cannot engage in business or employment in India without FRRO Permission.
- Indian Origin – If the applicant has held an Indian passport in the past or if any of their parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents were born in India.
- Married to an Indian Citizen – Spouse of an Indian citizen/ OCI Cardholder
How to Convert an E-Visa or Tourist Visa to X Visa in India?
An e-visa is the most popular among foreigners in India because it’s an online process. You can apply for it online and receive it within 24 to 48 hours. It doesn’t require many documents, only a passport size photograph and a copy of your passport. However, it has some limitations. It allows for only 90/180 days of continuous stay permission in India. Nevertheless, Indian origin individuals and those married to Indians can convert it into a Dependent Visa/ Entry Visa / X Visa.

For the conversion of any E-tourist visa or any other regular visa, the following documents are required:
1. For Indian Origin
The applicant needs the following documents:
- Surrender Certificate if an Indian passport was held in the past
- Old Indian passport
- Cancellation of ration card
- Cancellation of Election card
- Parent’s passport copy
- Birth certificate
2. Married to an Indian citizen
The following documents are required:
- Spouse’s Indian passport
- Marriage certificate

- Applicant’s 51* 51 MM light background Passport Size Photograph.
- Applicant’s Passport First and Last Page Copies.
- Applicant’s Visa and Immigration stamp page.

Lost Passport and Visa FIR Copy (If you have held an Indian passport in the past.) - A Copy of The Hospital discharge Summary (Only for a Newborn Baby)
- A signed Request Letter from the Applicant and a Signed Undertaking Letter from the Undertaker.
- Address proof in India :- A. Copy of Electricity bill / Telephone bill in your own/ Parents/ Grandparents/Spouse Name. B. Form – C (if Applicant staying at a hotel). C. Lease Licence in Case of Tenant.
All documents issued outside India, such as Marriage Certificates, Birth Certificates, Degree Certificates, and Single Status Certificates should be apostilled.
Renunciation/Surrender Certificate
A Surrender Certificate/Renunciation Certificate is required to convert their current Visa into an Entry Visa (X-Visa)/apply for an OCI card if they previously held an Indian Passport and acquired foreign citizenship. The applicant needs to fill out an online application for the Surrender of Indian Passport on the Passport Seva Website and pay the fee there. Afterwards, applicants have to book an online appointment and visit the Passport Office. This process usually takes 1 to 2 working days.
The surrender certificate government fee is 500 INR in India.
